The Year 9 Career Taster Program (CTP) provides schools with flexibility to build a program according to student interests, the availability and accessibility of taster experiences, and school capacity. The key outcome for students is to explore careers and pathways through engaging activities that expose them to the world of work and training.
Programs can be big or small, and may be delivered as a standalone course across the year, over a few lessons or days. Programs can focus on one area of learning, or it can be incorporated into several learning area(s). All pathways will focus on exploring career opportunities and pathways involving science, health, maths, languages, etc.
CTP is flexible with options for schools to adapt courses or develop their own delivery models to fit teaching needs. CTP aims to prioritise the use of relevant content and maximise outcomes for different student groups.
The State Government is working with industry, businesses, TAFE colleges and other stakeholders to ensure there are a range of activities and career experiences available to schools across Western Australia free of charge.
CTP supports TAFEs, government and non-government school sectors to ensure courses are well coordinated and assistance is available to make programs accessible for all students.
Program delivery
The CTP is available for delivery now! The program runs for four years, from 2022 through to the end of the 2025 school year.
The program’s delivery complements current teaching programs and opportunities throughout the state. CTP offers valuable activities and experiences. The aim is to expand student’s mindsets and expose learners to career pathways outside of their family experience, community and region.
Program development
The program has been co-designed by the WA Department of Training and Workforce Development in collaboration with the WA Department of Education, Catholic Education WA, the Association of Independent Schools WA, and WA TAFE colleges and industry.
This teaching program has been developed through extensive consultation in Perth and across regional WA. Key contributions have been made by industries and employers, schools, teachers, students, vocational training providers, and community groups. Central to the program design has been the recognition of the different circumstances, needs and aspirations of students, and promotes to students across the state that there is more than one path to success.
