The agriculture and forestry industry involves activities such as growing, harvesting and maintaining crops and timber, farming animals and studying the science behind these to improve how things are done and make them more sustainable. Examples of occupations in this industry include labourer, farmer, landscape designer, irrigation and nursery worker, agricultural scientist and engineer, gardener and biosecurity officer.

For some occupations in this industry, you can start a vocational qualification in Years 11 or 12. Other occupations will require tertiary study after you finish high school. Seasonal work, such as fruit picking, may require a skill set or no formal qualification.

Animal care

The animal care industry involves caring for animals in a zoo or wildlife sanctuary, breeding animals, treating sick and injured animals at a veterinary clinic or training animals for sports such as racing. Examples of occupations in this industry include veterinary nurse, pet groomer, zookeeper, veterinarian, farrier, pest controller, dog trainer and horse trainer.

Horticulture

The horticulture industry involves the design, technology, business, education and science of plants. It includes occupations in conservation, parks, gardens and turf, and the harvesting, storing, processing, and marketing of fruit, vegetables, flowers and other plants. Examples of occupations in this industry include groundskeeper, arborist, farmer, gardener, plant pathologist or geneticist, landscape designer, plant nursery worker, hydrologist, horticultural technician, garden writer, field biologist, horticultural engineer and florist.

Aquaculture/fisheries

The aquaculture and fisheries industry involves breeding, growing and harvesting fish, plants, algae and other organisms, for food, medicine, jewellery and other products. It can also involve work rebuilding endangered fish populations.
