Building and construction

The building and construction industry involves the planning, design, construction, renovation, repair and demolition of buildings such as houses, shops, offices, hotels and hospitals, as well as civil engineering of structures such as bridges, roads, railways, dams and airplane runways. Civil construction also includes construction of infrastructure, such as tunnels, harbours and water supply pipes. Examples of occupations in this industry include plumber, electrician, bricklayer, tiler, construction estimator, carpenter, architect, concreter, project manager, site engineer, supervisor, geotechnical and civil engineer, surveyor, boat builder and property developer.

For some occupations in this industry, you can start a vocational qualification in Years 11 or 12. Other occupations will require tertiary study after you finish high school.
