The food processing industry involves the preparation of food and drink products, by operating and maintaining machines, checking the quality of the food, weighing raw ingredients and making sure the work area is clean and hygienic. Food may be sliced, ground, mixed, dried, cooked, baked, frozen, or packaged before it is ready for people to eat. Examples of occupations in this industry include butcher, baker, factory worker, packer or abattoir worker, occupational health and safety officer, quality assurance officer, truck driver, food scientist, plant mechanic, business manager, salesperson.

For some occupations in this industry, you can start a vocational qualification in Years 11 or 12. Other occupations will require tertiary study after you finish high school. Some occupations may require a skill set or no formal qualification.
