The hospitality and food services industry involves occupations that support the running of businesses such as cafes, restaurants, hotels, catering companies and event venues. Examples of occupations in this industry include chef, sommelier, barista, hotelier, front of house manager, kitchen hand, wait staff and security officer.

For some occupations in this industry, you can start a vocational qualification in Years 11 or 12. Other occupations will require tertiary study after you finish high school. Some occupations may require a skill set or no formal qualification.

The retail and wholesale trade industry involve selling products to the general public or other companies. Many people will get their first job in retail stores as there are lots of opportunities for casual or part-time work. Wholesale trade involves selling products between companies, such as food, clothing or pharmaceuticals. The tourism and events industry can be an exciting industry to work in, providing positive experiences to both travellers and locals. Careers in tourism may involve arranging travel for others as a travel agent, running a hotel, motel or caravan park, or providing exciting recreation activities for tourists to Western Australia. Events involves marketing and managing events such as festivals, concerts, expos and conferences. Examples of occupations in this industry include hotelier, travel agent, front of house manager, museum and gallery guide, education officer, luggage porter, events manager, Aboriginal tour guide and travel agent, marketing officer and writer.
