The Australian Defence Force includes the Royal Australian Navy, the Australian Army and the Royal Australian Air Force. Examples of occupations in the Defence Force include army officer, submariner, electronics engineer, artillery operator, infantry solider, aircraft technician, naval mechanic, logistics manager, warehouse coordinator, cyber analyst and chef.

The defence industry has a range of industries and occupations that support the Defence Force, but don’t work in the Defence Force. For example, WA’s Henderson shipyard builds and maintains naval vessels used by the Royal Australian Navy. Examples of occupations in the defence industry include naval architect, software engineer, mechanical engineer, drafter, welder, electrician, pipefitter, program manager and purchasing officer.

For some occupations in this industry, you can start a vocational qualification in Years 11 or 12. Other occupations will require tertiary study after you finish high school.
